Recap: Holiday Well-Being: Mindfulness, Healthy Habits, and Behavioral Health Resources

As the holiday season approaches, it is essential to recognize that while this time of year can bring joy and celebration, it can also introduce stress and challenges.

On Nov. 13, Wellness Works and the Detroit Regional Chamber, in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, explored various aspects of holiday mindfulness, including managing stress, maintaining healthy habits, and utilizing behavioral health resources.

The webinar also discussed practical tips for prioritizing mental health, such as setting boundaries, managing financial stress, and knowing when to take a break.

Key Takeaways

  • Identify your mindfulness technique.
    • Learn how to practice silence. Allow your brain to process and regulate emotions to reduce your stress responses.
    • Use mindful breathing to interrupt the brain’s signal of fight or flight.
    • Name your emotions and acknowledge that they are temporary.
    • Know your triggers and have reasonable expectations for yourself and for others.
    • Develop a flexible mindset and identify your go-to mindfulness activities.

  • Seek nature for your well-being.
    • Spending at least 120 hours per week in nature is associated with higher levels of health and well-being. This can include walks or just sitting outside.
    • Nature helps with mood, attention, and circadian rhythm. It also boosts immune function by exposing you to microorganisms found in nature.

  • Eat mindfully.
    • Be fully present while eating and pay attention to your body for hunger cues.
    • Avoid emotional eating that may influence your food choices and quantities.
    • Be aware of how your environment influences your food intake.
